North Road Chapel
The land was originally a cricket pitch Southend Corporation bought the Freehold in 1879. The chapel was built in 1880. Built of Bath stone, it had two wings with space beetween for the horse drawn carriages carrying the coffins,to pass through.
The North wing was for unbelievers, the south for Christians. The chapel was originally built as an overflow cemetry for St. Mary’s Church. By 1969 North Rd. was full, Sutton Road became the principal burial site.
The chapel was left to deteriorate for years until finally it was gutted by fire and thanks to lottery grants has now been renovated and is run by SAVS (Southend organization for Voluntry Services.)
