The Quaker Meeting House

The Quaker movement was started by George Fox (1624-1690)Geoge became an itinerent preacher, his meetings were mainly silent meditation. during the reign of Charles II George’s followers, named ‘Friends’  refused to pay tithes to the church, and to take oaths in court, refused to  fight in wars and campaigned for the end of slavery.  Once when taken to court Fox urged the jury to ‘tremble before the word of the Lord.’  The judge mockingly called him a ‘quaker’ and the name stuck. Quakers were persecuted for years, many died in prison.
